In 2018, Indiana appointed its first official state insect, the Say's Firefly. The campaign to pass this legislation was led entirely by elementary school students. Their efforts prove that small voices can make a lasting impact, just like tiny specks of light can illuminate the night. The firefly is named for naturalist Thomas Say, who died in New Harmony, Indiana in 1834.
